Shortly after my Go Anniversary post, I was challenged to talk about why I chose real estate as a profession. It’s a good question, and it speaks somewhat to why Go is my real estate home.
As some of you know, I ran a retail store, Cerebral Hobbies, for twelve years before I went into real estate. Cerebral closed in 2006 and I was forced to figure out what I was going to do the next morning. My resume is pretty good, so I had some options. I started by thinking about what I liked about running a game store. The actual management of the place was frustrating at best, but the best part was being on the sales floor talking to the customers. By guiding them to a new game, letting them talk about their favorite game, I was helping them have fun, and it showed. There is an energy in that which is hard to describe. It left me charged up.
Real estate is a lot like that, but better. Sure, it has frustrating parts too, but the joy in a family’s eyes as you hand them the keys to their first home is amazing. Knowing that you helped someone avoid foreclosure by arranging a short sale is energizing. Those are the moments that keep me believing that real estate can change the world – one property at a time.
